We are called beyond our complacency
Sometimes, maybe even often, what Jesus has to say is troubling. It is uncomfortable, of course, but sometimes in prayer we have to allow ourselves to dwell on the unsettling reverberations of his presence. Beyond our complacency and the simple answers that can be tempting, we are called to the fullness of life that is our promise. However, there is no way to get there without being honest about who we are in relation to our God.
Jesus knows that this is not easy, he knows that his disciples will turn away from a mirror that is directed at them. So he wants the words to “sink in”. The betrayal he will suffer is in “human hands,” in the hands of each of us. We can only look at this reality because we know what he is doing with this betrayal; he is turning it into an opportunity for our salvation.
