Go; your faith saved you
We know the name of Bartimaeus the blind man. It seems that Bartimaeus was a memorable character for several reasons. First, we know he’s helpless and likely homeless. Second, he has done his research: he knows that Jesus is the Messiah in the line of David: ‘Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!’ Third, he most likely became a well-known disciple of the Christian community – which is why the evangelist assumes that his readers know him too. We also learn about the crowd: in their pious, callous way they tell a disabled man to keep quiet – they don’t understand the gospel! As always, Jesus is distinguished by his compassion, which has undoubtedly silenced the crowd – Jesus asks Bartimaeus for a conversation and heals him. “Go your way, your faith has made you well”. The typical redeeming words of Jesus – and a soul is also healed!
