The commandments of love

The Pharisees decided to put Jesus to the test after hearing how he silenced the Sadducees when they questioned him. As they gathered around him, one of the scholars asked, “What is the greatest commandment in the law?” Jesus replied, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind.’ Then he went on: “The second is similar: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.” Both commandments are challenging. However, we can find that the second often stretches us in more uncomfortable ways. Whenever this happens, Lord, help us love everyone we meet, no matter how we feel about them – both those we like and those we tend to avoid. Who knows – we might meet someone who consciously strives to love us!
