Joshua 3: 7-11, 13-17. Alleluia! – Psalm 113A (114): 1-6. Matthew 18:21-19: 1.

How many times do I have to forgive my brother?

The mercy of God is not human mercy – it goes beyond our underground lust for revenge or our distorted sense of justice. The comparison between the merciful Lord and the ruthless servant in today’s gospel reminds us that if God’s mercy really goes as far as it is described, we cannot accept it without exercising the same mercy towards others. Receiving God’s mercy must transform us so that we can forgive others. Receiving God’s mercy is realizing within ourselves the potential to cause the worst of harm. As we acknowledge this potential and are moved beyond it by God’s mercy, we can also see our potential to make the sweeping and radical gesture of forgiveness.
