Romans 8: 26-30. All my hope, O Lord, rests in your loving-kindness – Psalm 12 (13): 4-6. Luke 13: 22-30.

Make an effort to enter through the narrow gate

Consider an exam in which you compete with your classmates. The teacher says that students who do in the top fifty percent of the class will get a pass while the others fail regardless of their actual score. Do you learn harder and want to be at the top for sure? Or do you give up and hope that the knowledge you have acquired is enough to stay one step ahead of your competitors?

In today’s reading, Jesus recommends that people strive to enter through the narrow gate. That they should actually work as hard as possible to be righteous in the eyes of God. There is little point in aiming somewhere in the middle and then risking being left outside while others lean against God’s table.
