Medina Spirit wins Kentucky Derby giving trainer Bob Baffert a record 7th victory

Medina Spirit won the 147th Kentucky Derby in Louisville on Sunday, ousting Mandaloun in the final leg of the Triple Crown first leg.

The win was a historic win for Medina Spirit coach Bob Baffert, who with seven Kentucky Derby wins in his career is now the sport’s only record holder, surpassing Ben Jones, who won six between 1938 and 1952. Baffert also coached 2020 winner Authentic to give him back-to-back derby wins for the first time. Jockey John Velazquez, who rode for Authentic last year, meanwhile took his fourth Derby win.

Medina Spirit had the sixth highest rate in the field with 12/1. The favorite, Essential Quality, finished fourth, behind Medina Spirit, Mandaloun and Hot Rod Charlie.
