Readings

Genesis 49: 29-33; 50: 15-26. In your need turn to the Lord and you will live – Ps 104 (105): 1-4, 6-7. Matthew 10: 24-38.

May I pick up my cross and follow you

Why did you give me this cross to carry? It’s too heavy, too heavy, too awkward among all the other baggage I’m carrying. When I compare my cross with others, it seems bigger and heavier than that of my neighbors. And I think I’ve been wearing it for a while. . . and now i get some splinters, and is that a new blister?

But then I think of you on the cross. The crown of thorns you wore, the mockery of the crowd, the abuse you have suffered, and all for us. I do not feel worthy of you as I complain and moan about this burden. So I center my cross on my shoulder and keep an eye on you and your love. I hold on tight and drive on.

Lord remind me, even if it all seems too much, that God loved me so much that he sent his only son so that I could live. May I pick up my cross and follow you.
