About today
Readings

Romans 11: 1-2, 11-12, 25-29. The Lord will not forsake his people – Psalm 93 (94): 12-15, 17-18. Luke 14: 1, 7-11.

All who exalt themselves are humiliated

Can we really claim to have this spirit in us, which was also in Christ Jesus, if we are like the critics of Jesus in today’s reading? Jesus took the form of a servant, as Paul reminded the Philippians; he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death on the cross (Philippians 2: 7-8).

Our example is Mary of Nazareth, who happily acknowledged her lowliness before the Lord. With her, too, we can say: “The mighty one has done great things for me and holy is his name” (Lk 1,48-49). Power, property, and prestige can give us status in the eyes of the world; but what we are in the eyes of God is what really matters.
