How to pray

I am now teaching a Catholic elementary school, and our children (like most children in Catholic elementary schools) know the Our Father by heart, so they always say “Amen” at Mass before the next piece. This was also in a gospel read in February and we had a 6th grade mass in the parish church. Our wonderful priest slowly and consciously prayed this prayer with you and the parishioners present. While the children’s learned behavior was to say it quickly, this slowing down and reflection on the words allowed them to focus on this prayer in other ways. How often do we learn what to learn without considering the intent and context? Jesus taught us this prayer with all the elements of a peaceful and harmonious coexistence for our world – holiness; Kingdom of God on earth; Food; Forgiveness and saving grace.
