Go! I send you out like lambs among wolves

When Jesus commissioned 72 of his disciples to serve missions, he gave them a vision of a great harvest for the kingdom of God. The image of a harvest conveys the coming of God’s rulership on earth, with the harvest being the fruit of work and growth. The harvest that Jesus had in mind was not just the people of Israel, but all the peoples of the world.

Jesus says that his disciples must be lambs in the midst of wolves and warns that the disciples must expect resistance and persecution from those who oppose the gospel. The way we act and serve, if inspired by Jesus, requires some sacrifices in our lives and the realization that we can face resistance. But we are not expected to face this resistance alone – Jesus sent his disciples out in pairs. And he is always with us too.
